About the project

In 2022 I took part in an international project organised by Welcoming Spaces, a research group from Utrecht University. The main aim was to visualise migration and local development by using the photovoice research method. The project took place in 5 locations:

  • Camini, Italy
  • Altenburg, Germany
  • Talayuela, Spain
  • Łomża, Poland
  • Bedum, Netherlands

Photovoice is a creative research method in which participants take photographs, then analyse and discuss them to raise awareness on potential problems and possibly find better solutions for the future.

Workshops in Łomża

Together with 4 assistants from Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology, I joined the SGH research team for the workshops edition in Poland, Łomża, hosted by the Ocalenie Foundation.

The main task of a group of Łomża inhabitants was to walk around the city and capture photographs of welcoming and unwelcoming places. Furthermore, each participant had to draw a map based on feelings associated with the city, with colours representing emotions. Finally each selected image was given a title and a description.

All collected insights, maps and photographs lead to an exhibition in Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology to reflect on and conclude the whole project.

Visual identity

The researchers picked 5 colors and linked them with feelings of participants, related to particular places in the city. These colors have been used to draw mental maps during workshops. I used them as a visual leitmotif for the exhibition project. The layout is set on an 8 pt grid system.
